I have been reading Scott Hanselman’s blog on Windows 7 and the magic of Boot to VHD and it’s definitely got my brain started.
I’ve been planning to rebuild my main machine using Windows 7 for the last few weeks ever since the RTM was released. However, as the machine doubles as both a home-development machine and also a gaming machine, I’ve always never liked having all the gaming processes (Steam, DRM services, punkbuster, etc) runnng when doing development and all my development processes (SQL Server, for example) running when gaming.
Having read Scott’s blog post, and his step-by-step follow up guide, I believe this could be the solution. If I keep all my development software on a separate installation of Windows then I could keep the two completely separate.
I will post back if/when I try it out.
